BELFORT VS. FRANKLIN NEW MAIN EVENT AT UFC 103

  Dana White and the UFC wasted no time in signing top 10 middleweight free agent Vitor Belfort following the demise of his former employer Affliction MMA, and they have right away thrown Belfort into main event of UFC 103 on September 19th.

The heavy handed Brazilian will go head to head with former UFC top dog Rich Franklin, in a battle of former UFC champions. Vitor has officially replaced Dan "Hollywood" Henderson who was scheduled to fight Franklin in a rematch of their January '09 bout in which Henderson won a split decision.

Both fighters are coming off victorious outings as Franklin won a decision over Wanderlei Silva in the main event at UFC 99 and Belfort may have retired Matt "The Law" Lindland as he brutally KO'ed him in the first few seconds of their 'Day of Reckoning" bout.

USL - Montreal Impact Head to Florida, Look to Leapfrog over Miami FC

The Montreal Impact (6-8-4) face Miami FC (7-8-3), this Saturday, in Miami and with only two  points sepparating them in the standings , with a win, the Impact would be back in 6th position in the USL First Division standings.

Alouettes Drop 33-19 to Surging Eskimos, Calvillo Reaches Milestone

All good things must come to an end. As far as the Edmonton Eskimos were  concerned, payback was the order of the day and as easy as that, the Montreal Alouettes' four game unbeaten streak came to an end as the Als looked merely mortal against a motivated, momentum driven Eskimos squad. Final score : Montreal 19, Edmonton 33.

As of last Saturday, only 6000 tickets had been sold for the Montreal Impact's friendly match against FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who recently won the Champions trophy in Montreal that same day.

Once again showing that there is a keen interest in high quality soccer in Montreal, the fans showed up in droves and almost filled Saputo Stadium as 11,948 witnessed a great soccer game with some truly awe inspiring plays as the Impact kept up to, but eventually lost to Bordeaux by a score of 2-1.

BABALU PUTS HIS BELT WHERE HIS FISTS ARE

  Following the disappointment of Affliction Trilogy being cancelled, Strikeforce was able to at least save one fight from the final card assembled by Affliction and that is the light heavyweight tilt between Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Gegard Mousasi. When the bout was made by Affliction there was no title on the line, however, current Strikeforce champion Babalu will be defending his crown for the first time against Mousasi on August 15th at the "Carano vs. Cyborg" Pay Per View.

Sobral won the Strikeforce title this passed November after he landed an elbow which opened a terrible gash above the right eye of then champion Bobby Southworth. As a result, inbetween the first and second round the fight was called by the doctor. Since being kicked out of the UFC in 2007, Babalu has found success and is on a five fight winning streak.

Mousasi is undiscovered to the casual North American MMA fan but as one of the training partners of Fedor Emelianenko, Mousasi knows a thing or two about martial arts. At only 24 years old with first round finishes over the likes of Mark Hunt, Denis Kang, Melvin Manhoef and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, the sky is the limit for the young Red Devil.

The Strikeforce pay per view on August 15th will be headlined by Gina Carano and Cristine "Cyborg" Santos fighting for the 145 pound womans title. Also on the card will be Nick Diaz against Joe Riggs in a battle for the vacant welterweight title.

DEFENDER HICHAM AABOUBOU BACK WITH THE MONTREAL IMPACT

The Montreal Impact have announced that defender Hicham Aaboubou, is back with the team after accepting a two-season contract, pending the league’s approval. Aaboubou, a native of Morocco had previouslt played with the Impact in 2007 and recently tried out with the team during the international friendly matches against Syria and Haiti.

Anwar Stewart & Anthony Calvillo Named Players of the Week - (Week 4)

The "Player of the Week" honours keep piling up for the Montreal Alouettes and the team shows no signs of slowing down, be it on the field or in the winners' category for every week's nominations.

This week is actually an exception, as in the previous weeks, only one player was named when the winners were announced. This week, quarterback Anthony Calvillo as well as defensive end Anwar Stewart were fittingly named the CFL's Offensive and Defensive Players of the week for week 4.
